Whether you’re already taking Levemir®, just starting, or thinking about it, an important way to manage your diabetes is by keeping a Blood Sugar Diary.

When you keep a Blood Sugar Diary, you and your health care provider will be able to make better decisions about your treatment.

Before you start using your diary, you may wonder when you’re supposed to test your blood sugar levels. First, make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions. And, many people getting started with insulin test 4 times a day—when they wake up and after each meal.

  • When you wake up, you find your fasting plasma (blood) glucose, or FPG level. This test is usually taken in the morning before you eat anything. It works best if you haven’t had anything to eat in at least
    8 hours.
  • After you eat, you find your postprandial plasma (blood) glucose, or PPG level. This test is usually taken 2 hours after you eat. It measures how much your blood sugar level has spiked or risen because of the food you ate.

Make sure to print out the attached Blood Sugar Diary to stay on top of your numbers. Click here to get your Blood Sugar Diary.
