Keeping a Blood Sugar Diary

Tracking your blood sugar is an important part of diabetes management.

When you keep a Blood Sugar Diary to track and monitor your blood sugar levels, you and your doctor will be able to make better decisions about your diabetes treatment plan.

Before you start tracking your blood sugar levels in your diary, you may wonder when and how often you should check your blood sugar. First, make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions. Many people starting on insulin check 4 times a day—when they wake up and after each meal.

  • When you wake up, begin tracking your fasting plasma (blood) glucose, or FPG level. This is usually taken in the morning before you eat anything. It works best if you haven’t had anything to eat in at least
    8 hours.
  • After you eat, track your postprandial plasma (blood) glucose, or PPG level. This test is usually taken 2 hours after you eat. It measures how much your blood sugar level has spiked or risen because of the food you ate.
